Mary Alice Martin, age 95, of Pennington Gap, VA was born in LeJunior, KY on Wednesday, September 3, 1919 and passed away Saturday, February 14, 2015 at the Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap, VA. She was the oldest member of the St. Charles Church of God where she had been a member for over 60 years. Mary was the daughter of the late Ewing and Susie King. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Arnold Martin; one infant son, Jackie Douglas Martin; one sister and six brothers. She is survived by one son, Verlin Roy Martin Sr. and wife, Jean of Pennington Gap, VA; two daughters, Jo-Ann Capps and husband, Eric of Pennington Gap, VA and Brenda Jones and husband, Clifford of Shepherdsville, KY; five grandchildren Verlin Roy Martin, Jr., David Martin and Wanda Blevins all of Pennington Gap, Va. Melanie Jones of Mt. Washington, Ky. and Clifford Jones of Cox's Creek, Ky and six great-grandchildren; also two sisters, Thelma Moore and Lillie McKendrick, both of Summersville, SC.

 

Funeral services will be held at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, February 17, 2015 in the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap with Rev. Roy Webb officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 5:00 P.M. until time of services. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at Cecil-Frye Cemetery in Pennington Gap, VA. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 12:30 P.M. Wednesday to go to the cemetery. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. In Lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the St. Charles Church of God building fund. Billy Lee Carter age 79 of Bowling Green, KY was born in St. Charles, VA on Wednesday, February 28, 1935, passed away at his home on Wednesday, January 21, 2015. He was the butcher at Piggly Wiggly in Pennington Gap, VA and manager of the meat department at Piggley Wiggley in Big Stone Gap, VA.  He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service and after 25 years of service retired as Post Master of the Rose Hill, VA post office. He was honored as a Kentucky Colonel and was a charter member of the Cumberland Horse Association.  Bill was a well know AQHA quarter horse judge.  He was preceded in death by his first wife of 58 years and mother of his children Patricia Doss Carter, father Ray Carter, mother Golden Robinette and step-father Ewing Zack Robinette. Billy is survived by his wife Faye Bocock-Carter of Dryden, VA, three sons William Carter of Glen St. Mary, FL, Craig Carter (Diane) and Chris Carter-Flitz (Richard) all of Bowling Green, KY. He is also survived by seven grandchildren Brent Carter (Jessi),  Madison McIvor (Bobby), Dylan Carter all of Bowling Green, KY, Ashton Carter, Riley Carter, Mason Carter and Anslee Carter all of Glen St. Mary, FL and one sister Betty Carter Davis of Florida.

 

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Saturday, January 24, 2015 at the Province Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, VA. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday at the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary with Michael Dalton officiating. Burial will follow at Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, VA. Charles Leonard Flanary age 78 of Pennington Gap, VA and formerly of St. Charles. He was born in Bonny Blue, VA on Saturday, May 2, 1936 and passed away Thursday, February 19, 2015 at the Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN.  Leonard had been a resident of Lee County, VA most of his life.  He had been a Primitive Baptist minister for many years and was a member of the Fairview Primitive Baptist Church on Graveyard Hill in St. Charles.He was preceded in death by his wife Blanch Flanary, one son Teddy Lee Flanary, parents Hearl and Mae Flanary, one sister Marie Winsby and seven brothers Hubert, Chester, Bobby Jack, Jerry, Harry and Eddie Ray Flanary.Leonard is survived by his wife Helen Flanary of the home, one son Marty Flanary of Weber City, VA, one daughter Becky Flanary of Cicero, IN, two grandchildren Chanda Flanary and Angel Anderson, one brother Larry Flanary and wife, Cary of St. Charles, VA, three sisters Dora Lee Tonker of Big Stone Gap, VA, Donna Parsons and husband, Jimmy of Woodway, VA and Jessie Rutledge of Woodway, VA and several nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Theodore Eugene Fleenor age 80 of Big Stone Gap, VA was born in Lee County, VA on Sunday, February 17, 1935 and passed away Sunday, February 22, 2015 in Rock Lick, VA. He was a retired auto worker for General Motors and a member of the United Auto Workers. He was a Veteran of the US Army during the Korean War and was of the Pentecostal Faith.Theodore was preceded in death by his wife, high school sweetheart and love of his life Barbara Fleenor, parents Harold and Estelle Fleenor, and one sister Barbara Barnette.Theodore is survived by one son Scott Fleenor and wife, Nancy of Portsmouth, OH, five grandchildren Sara Wilson of Otway, OH, Britany Bazler of West Portsmouth, OH, Brandon Fleenor, Scotty Fleenor and Tommy Fleenor all of Portsmouth, OH, two great-grandchildren Ty Wilson and Aubrey Wilson both of Otway, OH. He is also survived by five brothers Gerald Fleenor of Vandalia, OH, Roger Fleenor of Vandalia, OH, Ken Fleenor of Dayton, OH, Ronald Fleenor of Vandalia, OH and Donald Fleenor of the Rock Lick Community, two sisters Phyllis Disney and Crickett Fleenor both of the Rock Lick Community and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap, VA with Rev. Opal Stewart Burden, age 92, of Pennington Gap, VA passed away Tuesday, February 24, 2015 atthe Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN.Opal was the owner and operator of Opals Beauty Shop in Pennington Gap for 42 years before retiring.  She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Pennington Gap and was an active member of the Powell Valley Rebekah Lodge # 50, where she held several offices. She enjoyed her work as a beautician, family gatherings, visiting with friends, and working in her vegetable and flower gardens. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed both hunting and fishinig.She was preceded in death by her husband, Waymon Burden and son-in-law, Fred Cohl.She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Burden Cohl of Big Stone Gap, VA, one sister-in-law, Treva Burden Stewart of Noblesville, IN; two brothers-in-law, Willard and wife Sue Burden of San Diego, VA; Jim Travis of Jonesville, VA; several nieces, nephews and special loving friends.
